Fw: Reminder about this Thursday's Christmas Market in Knutsford.

  Just a polite reminder –

This Thursday sees Knutsford's 1st Festive/Christmas Street Market from 2.00pm – being opened by C.A.F.T. Patron Jenifer James. There will be lots going on with a variety of stalls including Crafts and food and drink, it is  great for families and a perfect opportunity to purchase some unique gifts. Special guest will be X Factor's Rowetta and children from 3 primary schools will be singing carols.  In the evening is the Knutsford Light switch on,  this year being done by premiership Footballer Jagielka, as well as Father Christmas and his reindeer. We are delighted that this year C.A.F.T. has been chosen as the nominated charity for the street collection – which is fabulous and helps raise awareness and vital funds – which could not come at a better time for us as we are currently providing Christmas parties to children – CAFT gives a Christmas party to hundreds of children – for some children it might be their only Christmas, sadly for others their last !!

Please come along and join in the festivities. If anyone is able to help with the street collection or would like any more information, please ring Julie Gray on 01565 830053.

Can I also take this opportunity to remind you of the Festival of Christmas Trees, taking place at St. Cross Church, Knustsford from 2nd Dec until Sunday 5th December concluding with a carol concert. All funds from this will go to The Children's Adventure Farm Trust and Children In Need. For further information contact Julie Gray or organiser Helen Rogers on 01565 654478.

Help with a Bladder Management study?

The SCI community has many special needs and new products and services are continually being introduced.  However one of the most basic day to day activities for someone with SCI has been long overlooked.  Bladder management products, such as intermittent catheters, have traditionally been a 'once size fits all' offering, with the result being products that don't fit our communities specialized needs.  Companies are starting to realize that this approach doesn't work and are beginning to research new bladder management products and support designed especially for someone with an SCI.  Help participate and input your views on things like the need for assistance in the usage of catheters, or complications like UTIs by going to http://bit.ly/SCI_study.  Please be aware that data from the study is aggregated to keep individual's information anonymous and participants receive a £25 honorarium in appreciation for their time.

Disabled people have the right to protest

I always understood that one of the most important characteristics of a liberal democratic state was that it’s government ruled with the consent of its citizens, and without such consent it became a dictatorship. In recent weeks there have been successive protests whenever a coalition politicians showed their face anywhere outside Westminster, in many cases they have only been able to use back or side doors to get into events. ( Vince Cable ICC Birmingham, Nick Clegg at Hugo Young Lecture to name but two instances.)

At the same time the number of protests against cuts around the country by an increasing number of groups including DPAC has risen dramatically including continuing protests against the tax evasion of £6 billion by Vodaphone and tax evasion by Chancellor Osborne of £1.6 million (latest, and rising  HMRC estimate).

On Wednesday, I went with other disabled people attempted to join students, school children, and others at a protest in London, however we were refused permission to join this by the police who had kettled thousands of protestors in Whitehall. We watched and heard about school children as young as 14 or 15 being kettled, illegally searched and arrested.

Surely any government whose ministers can only sneak in back doors, who  refuse to allow disabled people to legitimately protest and who feel the need to kettle children have lost any legitimacy to govern.

Medical test to be fairer - don't believe a word.

Higher rate care for two year old daughter

Just wanted to thank you for all the incredibly helpful information on this site. It has given me the confidence to apply for the DLA for my two years old daughter on the basis of her prolonged illness (since birth)and we received a positive outcome within only a few weeks . .  . It means a lot to us not only as a recognition of the very difficult time we have all been going through, but also as it should enable us to receive further support through Carer's Allowance (still awaiting their decision on it) since both my husband and I had to stop working as a result of trying to help our daughter the best we could with her difficulties. The subscription to this website has really been worthwhile.

More good news from the forums at the end of this newsletter

Medical test to be fairer? Don't believe a word.

You may have heard on the news today that the work capability assessment (WCA) – the medical test for employment and support allowance – is to be made fairer and more just.

It isn't.

It's actually going to be made very much more harsh and unjust.

Because although the coalition have said they accept all of the recommendations made by Professor Harrington in his report on the WCA, they have also said they are still going ahead with changes to the WCA which they set out earlier this year.

We've written before about the plans to remove almost half the mental health descriptors, dock points from amputees who can lift with their stumps and assess claimants with walking problems using imaginary wheelchairs. (See: Even harsher new ESA medical approved) (Members only)

Nothing has changed in those plans according to the government response to Harrington.  So don't give the claims of a new, fairer world for claimants too much credibility until you've read the small print.

Though one very positive outcome of the Harrington review is the recommendation that the audio taping of  medicals should be piloted to see if it is a practical possibility. This has been accepted by the DWP.  There's not a shred of doubt that this is entirely due to the hard campaigning and many submissions to the review by Benefits and Work members.  Well done to everyone for forcing Atos and the DWP this far.  You can read our review of the Harrington report. (Members only)

Elsewhere, it's hard to find good news on the campaigning front.

Citizens Advice have launched a Fair Welfare campaign, beginning with efforts to improve the WCA – but is it all much too little and much too late?

Citizens Advice is also a member of a new campaign, Justice for All, aimed at improving access to justice and fighting cuts in legal aid.  But their website is silent on what campaigning they are actually going to do.

And, yet again, Citizens Advice is a member of the Disability Benefits Consortium fronted by Disability Alliance.  The best that the consortium seems to be able to manage by way of campaigning, however, seems to be a really stiff letter to Iain Duncan Smith.

Though, just as we were writing this, we got news of a more promising campaign by Mind to postpone the migration of incapacity benefit claimants to ESA until all of Harrington's recommendations have been implemented.  You can read more about Mind's campaign here.

Finally, as always, we have some good news hastily gathered from the forums.

New for Christmas, the 'Transformer Spastic' - but makers scrap UK launch over fears it may cause offence

An American toymaker has scrapped the UK launch of its latest Transformer model – after revealing the new character is being named Spastic.

Transformers creators Hasbro, clearly unaware of how offensive the term is regarded in Britain, was shocked at the outcry after proudly unveiling the popular boy's toy online.

While it is seen as a derogatory word in Britain, spastic is used widely in the U.S. as a casual word for clumsiness or to describe someone who is overexcited.

Online Transformers fans have been locked in a transatlantic war of words ever since the name was announced a week ago.

The latest figure in the hugely successful Transformers franchise – the basis for the blockbuster films starring Shia LaBeouf – was expected to be one of the biggest sellers of next year.

In its 26-year history, the toy line has expanded to encompass comic books, animation, video games and films.

Spastic forms part of the 'Power Core Combiners 2011 Wave 2' range.

Hasbro moved quickly to stop the UK launch after it was besieged with complaints. But the toy will go on sale with its original name in the U.S. as planned in January.

The company said it 'intended no offence by the use of the name Spastic' and added that 'it will not be available via traditional retail channels in Europe, including the UK'.

'Our goal is to have all families who enjoy our brands feel good about their purchases and experiences,' Hasbro added.

In American slang, the word spastic is often shortened to 'spaz.'

It has been used in TV shows like Friends and Tiger Woods got into hot water when he used it after losing the U.S. Masters tournament four years ago.

His remark – 'As soon as I got to the greens I was a spaz' – drew no attention in America, but Woods was forced to aplogise after being roundly criticised in Britain.

Royal cuts!

Crippen anticipates still more cuts after the announcement of the royal wedding in 2011!

Jane Campbell - Secret Agent

Crippen has been watching what Baroness Jane Campbell has been getting up to in the House of Lords these past weeks. Here's his report.

A week or so ago I made mention in my weekly cartoon blog of the fact that, despite being elevated to the House of Lords Jane Campbell was still hard at work fighting our corner, albeit no longer on the streets with other Disabled activists.

I know that some of you think that by accepting her seat in the House, she abandoned the cause and effectively sold out to the establishment. Well for those of you who doubted my statement, and her, read on!

Speech to the House of Lords

Last week Jane Campbell told the House of Lords in no uncertain terms just what she thought about the ConDem's programme of 'Fair Cuts' and its impact upon Disabled people. This speech, apart from causing them a great deal of embarrassment and a lot of work trying to find an excuse other than their pathetic cries that this is really a local authority issue, looks as though it may cause the Government to make some kind of reassessment; in effect a U-turn. No mean fete in itself.

But not content with that, she went on to directly confront other senior government ministers the week preceding the speech - Kenneth Clarke, and Lord McNally when she was taking evidence as a member of The Joint (Select) Committee and Maria Miller in Her Regular One-To-Ones. She is also due to see Eric Pickles and Treasury ministers on the same subject over the coming weeks about the inhumanity of some of these cuts, in particular the Mobility Allowance issue. Where would we get that kind of immediate access to the decision-makers so quickly I wonder?

Seriously flawed

Jane's argument is that the Government's proposal is seriously flawed. In her speech to the House of Lords she gave four main reasons to support this view.

1. These cuts will have negative and costly effects on disabled people’s health and well-being, their ability to develop social and community networks, and their capacity to move on from residential living.

2. It conflicts with the government’s policies for personalisation, independent living and encouraging Disabled people to gain or retain employment.

3. It is based on a misunderstanding of the purpose of modern residential care and the potential of the people living there.

4. It is incompatible with the UN Convention on the Rights of Disabled People.

She reminded the House that the Government's own figures regarding DLA estimates that this cut alone will affect 58,000 Disabled young people and

working age adults and that over two-thirds of the care home resident’s income will be taken away (see Bert Massey’s comments regarding this issue in last week’s Crippen cartoon blog). This makes Britain’s most severely disabled people the group who lose most from the cuts.

I would love to have been a fly on the wall when Jane was heard to ask the Ministers:  "Some politicians are accepting a 5% cut but would they accept a 45% or 69% cut to the money that buys them their personal freedoms?!"

I've managed to get hold of a copy of Jane's speech to the House of Lords and have summarised just a few of the points she made. She said:

"I am sure we all agree that people living in care homes are full citizens. We should therefore expect and want them to exercise their human and civil rights, and contribute to civil society like everyone else  ...

“Residential care homes are not intended to be prisons or to hide people away or deny them opportunities the rest of us take for granted – independence and choice, access to public life, education, and for those who can – the possibility of work.

" ... I do not accept that the national finances are such that we should now deny people living in care homes the same rights as other members of our society.”

Impact Assessment

Jane also raised the concern that this cut in spending was not subject to a disability equality and human rights impact assessment; or discussed with those Disabled people who have had years of experience of advising governments on disability matters, or indeed, why the treasury failed to run it by its own expert department - the Office for Disability Issues (ODI). She asked: "Could the Minister please explain why this budgetary cut was not subject to any form of analysis?"

Employment and Support Allowance

Jane also took the Government to task on the issue of ending the Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) after one year and for targeting this allowance for a £2 billion cut.

She confronted them with their claim that a high percentage of fraud was evident amongst people who claimed ESA and argued that the tough requirement to access ESA means that fraud is highly unlikely and that there is no evidence to support that this is the case to date.

Jane ended her speech with the following words:

"Disabled people have campaigned for the last 30 years to be treated as equal citizens. The CSR proposes cuts that will hit disabled people, (already some of the poorest in society), disproportionately hard and undermine their independence. That doesn’t fit well with the government talk of a 'fair' and 'Big' society.

"The “Big fair Society” can only be achieved, if support structures are there to enable disabled people to play their part. Otherwise we go back to a time, when most disabled people were caught in a culture of dependency with no alternative but to beg for charity and be grateful for what they received. This, my Lords fills me with dread."

I've known Jane for quite a few years now and can remember her during earlier days of protest, waving her placard along with the rest of us on Westminster Bridge and chanting "rights not charity!". It's good to see that by accepting the ermine, she hasn't lost any of her grass roots feelings and is playing the part of a very effective political agitator within the system.

For those people who doubt her integrity I would remind them that Women won the vote and slaves were emancipated by a combination of grassroots activism and friends inside governments. Like myself, I trust that you'll now see just how effective she is in this role.

CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION

Strategies for Survival: Adapting to the Government's New Agenda

26th November 2010

Ricoh Arena, Coventry, CV6 6G

Come and join us to network, learn & strategise in response to the Comprehensive Spending Review

Support Solutions is delighted to announce our 2nd National Conference at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on 26th November 2010. We have selected an excellent venue and we are keeping delegate and exhibitor costs to an absolute minimum with discounts for bookings of 3 delegates or more delegates.

Speakers include Lord Victor Adebowale (Social Enterprise Ambassador & CEO of Turning Point), Michael Patterson (housing support & social care expert & Director of Support Solutions) & Geraldine Haden (housing management lawyer & Partner at Gorrara Haden Solicitors) & an Expert Panel.

If you are involved in providing or commissioning housing, support & social care services for vulnerable people you should be there! This is an ideal networking, learning & problem solving opportunity.

We find ourselves in a situation of economic crisis & public expenditure cuts, the retrenchment of Supporting People, concerns about revenue and contracts, the Comprehensive Spending Review & fundamental changes to the way we work including but not limited to the Personalisation Agenda.

The primary outcomes for this conference are that delegates should understand:

  • How housing, support & social care is evolving including the Comprehensive Spending Review
  • The legal and operational implications of gaining and losing contracts & how to protect your position
  • The challenges and opportunities which lie ahead.
  • The revenue situation & how to change & consolidate your financial position.

We have identified 4 key themes which we will run as workshops:

  • The Comprehensive Spending Review & revenue sources for services: where to look and what to look for
  • Personalisation & responding to the new Government Agenda
  • What happens if you win a contract for support or social care? What happens if you lose?
  • The new Health Agenda: opportunities for sector providers

The event will include an Exhibition for housing support and social care Providers and suppliers of services to the sector. Please contact Emily Wightman to book your stand for only £200-£300 (depending on the size and nature of your organisation).

All Support Solutions learning events & conferences feature high quality information & resource packs on a range of issues of direct relevance to delegates. This event will be no exception.

We can arrange reduced rate, good quality hotel accommodation at or near the venue for delegates who need it and will organise a free pre-conference evening reception at the venue for delegates.

You can download a booking form by clicking here and to download a flyer click here.

This event is only £99 + VAT with a 10% reduction on bookings of 3 or more delegates.

Please call us on 0121 707 7766/8881 or email emily@supportsolutions.co.uk if you'd like to talk to us about this event.
