Press Release: Amputees in Action CEO Joins Panel for 2010 Stelios Award for Disabled Entrepreneurs in the UK

Amputees in Action CEO Joins Panel for 2010 Stelios Award for Disabled Entrepreneurs in the UK

London, 10th November 2010

John Pickup, CEO and Founder of Amputees in Action, a specialist agency that supplies amputee actors for medical training and film productions joins a prestigious panel of judges who will help Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou to decide the winner of this year's Stelios Award for Disabled Entrepreneurs in the UK John's colleagues on the judging panel include Julie Meyer, online 'Dragon' and founder of Ariadne Capital; Economist editor Daniel Franklin and the Daily Mail's Helen Loveless.

As 2009 winner of the Stelios Award for Disabled Entrepreneurs in the UK, John will now take on the difficult task of helping to decide which of the nominees will take home the £50,000 prize.

*       The award is in its fourth year and has since June been seeking nominees for the prize. An overwhelming number of entrants have responded and a shortlist of individuals who demonstrate exceptional entrepreneurial spirit will soon be announced.

John Pickup said:

"To be part of the 2010 judging panel has shown me how difficult it is to choose the most deserving amongst the excellent candidates. All of the entrants were impressive and it has been really tough to identify the three most outstanding businesses.

It has been a great honour to receive support and business expertise from Sir Stelios and the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation this year. This guidance has given us the confidence to explore and realise new markets domestically and internationally.

Receiving the Award last year has helped us recognise that we are providing an essential service that is both needed and wanted by medical practitioners. The prize money has been allocated to a training programme that will enable amputees to become better actors, with the skills to perform action scenes for the entertainment industry and also the casualty simulations world. We hope to launch this programme in 2011 and possibly extend it to actors with other disabilities going forward."

Sir Stelios added:

"John embodies all of the qualities I appreciate in like-minded entrepreneurs: the passion, dedication and willingness to take risks. As the 2009 winner, he had invaluable insights into the applications we considered to become finalists for the Stelios Award for Disabled Entrepreneurs in the UK - 2010.

I am passionate about encouraging entrepreneurship through the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, working in partnership with Leonard Cheshire Disability on this Award. With around 50 per cent of disabled adults out of work, removing the barriers disabled people face in business is essential. Self employment is often the only viable option for many disabled people as it offers flexibility and helps bypass much of the prejudice that, sadly, still exists."

The 2010 winner of the Stelios Award for Disabled Entrepreneurs in the UK will be announced on 25th November at the London Marriot in Grosvenor Square at the Growing Business Awards, the most important event for small businesses in the UK. Business and Enterprise Minister Mark Prisk will give the keynote speech at the event organised by Caspian Publishing and the Confederation of British Industry ("CBI").
