User-friendly blue badge scheme launched online for the county

A NEW service to allow disabled people in Cumbria to apply for blue badges for their cars online has been launched by Cumbria County Council.
Blue badges are a national scheme providing a range of parking concessions for disabled people with severe mobility problems who have difficulty using public transport.

It has been specifically designed to help them to travel independently, as either a driver or passenger, by allowing them to park close to their destination.

Cumbria County Council receives thousands of blue badge applications each year and has extended its service so that applicants in Cumbria can now apply online as well as by post or telephone.

The online service is quick and efficient and means disabled people can apply for a badge from the comfort of their home.

An added benefit is that it reduces the council's carbon footprint by using less paper when delivering services.

People are automatically eligible to apply for a badge if they receive the higher rate of the mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance, are registered severely sight impaired (blind), or receive a War Pensioner's Mobility Supplement.

People may also be eligible for a badge if they have a permanent and sustainable disability which means they cannot walk, or which makes walking very difficult, have a severe disability in both arms, and are unable to operate all or some types of parking meter (or would find it very difficult to operate them).

To find out more about the criteria and apply for a car badge online, simply log on to the website at www.cumbria.gov.uk/adultsocialcare/services/carbadges.asp.
